When asked why he opened Touba Bakery, owner Papa Seck, will smile and quickly tell you “to make people happy, this is my dream!”
The bakery is named for Touba, the holy city of Mouridism, in Seck’s home country of Senegal. Reminders of his home fill the small bakery, where photos and artifacts from West Africa line the walls.
Café Touba is also the name of the rich and spicy coffee Seck serves. “Muslims don’t drink alcohol, so coffee is used for everything!” Café Touba is the traditional drink of Senegal and was popularized by Cheikh Amadou Bamba. It’s spice comes from the Guinea pepper which is thought to be good for eye health.
